Jerome David Salinger was an American novelist, storyteller and writer who gained fame with his only novel, The Catcher in the Rye, which took him ten years to write. The novel became popular among American students and cemented Salinger's place in literature. Prior to his writing career, Salinger served as a hero in World War II and participated in the invasion of Normandy. He withdrew from the literary world in 1965.
